Also known as the Internet connection firewall, the Windows Firewall helps you in protecting your computer from unauthorized users, users that can gain access to your computer through the Internet or other networks, exposing your PC and its data to a wide range of threats. This program was first pre-installed in the Operating Systems of Windows XP and from then on, in all the versions of Microsoft Windows OS.
Should You Turn the Windows Firewall On or Off?
The Windows Built-In Firewall automatically functions in the background even when you may have another Firewall turned on. Is recommended to keep it on as turning it off could make your device more vulnerable to unauthorized access.
To turn the Windows Firewall on or off, you need to select the Start button, then open Windows Defender Security Centre, then go to Firewall and Network Protection section, choose Network Profile and then switch On or Off the Windows Firewall.
If your device is already connected to a network, the policy settings will prevent you from completing the steps, and in this case, you will need to contact the Administrator.
The Need for a Good Firewall
The main function of a firewall is to block unauthorized incoming user’s connections. It can block different types of unauthorized users intelligently. It allows you to access to files and share them with other services when you’re connected to your home network, and at the same time, does not allow this when you are connected to a public unsafe network such as a Wi-Fi connection outside airports where they have little or no security.
It does its job in the background by asking you for your inputs only when required. When any new incoming program wants to connect to your network, the firewall creates a pop-up or dialog box, asking for your permission. It also has a feature where you get a notification when it has blocked a new program. It also helps protect your data from data theft, data corruption, and user credential theft. It helps in administrative control in severs and other computers and networks.
The Windows Firewall performs all these functions and it protects your Windows PC from Malware and Viruses that try to attack your files, data and important programs, while you are busy surfing the internet or using an unknown network.
